Outreach: Fall 2025

SHEILA AT THE PAWTUXET FARMERS MARKET

The Pawtuxet Farmers Market in Cranston, RI is a lovely place to spend a Saturday morning during the summer/early fall season. I was thinking that it would be a good place to meet people and hand out our Smart Meter brochure: “What RI Energy Isn’t Saying About the AMF (Smart) Meter Upgrade.” I reasoned that people who enjoy fresh produce would be inclined to listen to information about a current issue affecting their health and the health of their families. And I was right!

I went to the Farmers Market on several Saturdays, meeting people and handing out the brochure, along with our Opt-Out flyer. Happily for me, the person in charge of the Market approached me and asked if I’d like to have a booth. I was grateful for that, so that I could sit at a table with my materials.

I found that most people were willing to listen when I introduced myself as a co-founder of RI4SafeTech, and as someone living in the neighborhood. Few people had heard about Smart Meters, or that they are coming to RI now, and will be coming to Cranston in the next few months.

One gentleman approached my booth and remarked, “This can’t be said often enough!” Another gentleman told me that he is an engineer and he “hates” these Smart Meters. I happened to meet my state Representative, my former state Senator, and my former city council member at various times, and provided the information to them. I met some people who were interested enough to want to share the brochure with friends and on facebook. This has turned out to be a worthwhile way to spread the word about RI Energy’s deployment of Smart Meters, so that residents can inform themselves in order to make a decision that is protective of their families.
